Michael is a Founder and the Senior Principal of the Hunter-Wimberly Group. He held numerous executive and senior level positions throughout a distinguished thirty-year career with the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
A 1983 graduate of the United States Border Patrol Academy, Mr. Wimberly served as a Patrol Agent in Charge, Assistant Chief Patrol Agent, and Deputy Chief Patrol Agent along the United States border in California, Arizona, Texas and Puerto Rico where he led multifaceted sea, air and land border security operations. He is a rated airplane and helicopter aviator, as well as a Coast Guard-trained vessel operator.
In 2003, Mr. Wimberly was selected to be the principal architect of CBP’s Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) program where he tested, evaluated, and successfully implemented the U.S Department of Homeland Security’s first operational deployment of unmanned aviation systems for federal law enforcement and border security purposes. Beginning in 2004, he served as Chief of U.S. Border Patrol Air and Marine Operations and in 2005 as the first Deputy Assistant Commissioner of CBP’s Office of Air and Marine in Washington D.C., responsible for leading the world’s largest aviation and maritime law enforcement organization. In 2007, he returned to field command as Director of Air Operations, heading a CBP Air Branch where he directed aviation operations and federal law enforcement activities focused on securing the borders of the United States against terrorists and weapons of terror. He was an inaugurating member of the Unified Command of the Department of Homeland Security’s New Mexico/West Texas Alliance to Combat Transnational Threats (ACTT).
Mr. Wimberly’s meritorious service awards include the 2008 U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner’s Award for Mission Integration, and the U.S. military’s National Defense and Air Force Meritorious Service Medals while serving with the 196th Tactical Fighter Squadron (ANG) from 1985 - 1993. In October 2015 Mr. Wimberly was awarded the Order of International Police and Public Safety Medal (IPM) by the International Association of Airport and Seaport Police.
Mr. Wimberly attended the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University. He is a 2009 graduate of the Senior Executive Fellows program at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and sits on the Board of Directors of the non-profit Morrone 9/11 Counterterrorism Center.
